Why does my dog sniff everything?

asked by MIE_KNOWS on 14 May 2008 17:55 in Health & Wellness

My dog is constantly sniffing. She never stops, she will wake up and start sniffing around at everything. Its really embarrassing because when I have people over, she just sniffs their crotches and won't leave them alone.

Wow!

Sounds like you have a little obsession going on.

You need to redirect your dogs attention. As soon she starts to sniff, make a noise to distract her and reward her with praise and a tasty treat (use something healthy and grain free, because you are going to be using a LOT of these). Do the same thing with her crotch sniffing. Additionally, make sure she is getting enough exercise. If you are giving her a half hour per day, raise it to an hour. If you usually exercise her for an hour, one hour, raise it to two and so on -double it. Keeping her tired and keep redirecting her focus. Don't yell at her, that will make her more compulsive. If a vocal redirection doesn't work, bang a pot on something to make a loud noise or fill a cola can with coins and shake it. Only use this method when you want to redirect her attention. If that doesn't work, you should seek help from a professional behaviorist.

I agree with Cupofdog.

However, I would suggest some research into your dog's breed. If there is any hound or some other purebred in her background, she could be predisposed to sniffing. Even if this isn't the case, getting your dog into agility training classes will help with the obsessive component she is exhibiting. If she has a sniffing background, agility training or search and rescue training will help her relax. Imagine a really smart kid in kindergarten who is reading at a 5th grade level. That kid is bored out of his mind because he isn't being challenged. Its similar to that.

I don't know much about this topic - only what I had seen in an episode of It's Me or the Dog (Yay for VS!)...

So yes, it is embarrasing when your dog sniffs someones crotch but this is how they identify you...oddly enough.  Apparently our crotch is like a dogs bum...charming thought, right?

Have you tried to distract your dog?  Sometimes I distract Maggie by tossing the stuffed toys around.
