What does everyone feed their dogs and why?
I am curious as too how other dog owners choose the food they feed their pet. Did the 2007 pet food recall change your habits? How much do commercials, vets advice and advice from the internet play into your decision as a caretaker?

I homecook for my dog. I also feed Solid Gold. It is a great holistic feed. I do not feed anything with dyes, by products, filler or cornmeal. Organic or holistic is the way to go.
What is this multivitamin being mentioned? I also homecook for Maggie - it's mixed with a bit of Wellness but I want to be sure she's getting everything she needs!! :)
whatever is cheapest or on sale at the pet store. i didn't think it mattered what i fed the dog.
Mike1971, you need to look at the ingredients on the food you feed! Would you eat all of that processed junk and chemicals? If you do, you are probably like 1/3 of the US and are obese. By allowing your dog to eat so badly, you are contributing to his early death!
I feed Wysong, The Thinking Person's Dog Food. http://www.wysong.net/ I have been a breeder for over 15 years and I think it is fantastic. Wasn't involved in the recall either!
purebred, thats a little harsh! mike - you are not feeding your dog well, but i wouldn't go so far as to imply you are 'contributing to his early death.'
if you are looking to save money, there are some great brands that are not pricey. since you said you are already going to the pet store, rather then the supermarket, thats one step! make sure you buy your food from a specialty retailer. then, make sure the first 3 ingredients are meats or organs, not grains or byproducts. avoid foods with DHA and ethoxquin as those are toxic chemicals used commonly in lower quality products.
i feed Wellness. it was reccomended by my vet.
I feed BARF - Biologically Appropriate Raw Food - raw meats and bones, whole fruits and vegetables.
BARF is better!
I learned about it from a friend.
I feed my dog whatever I am eating. Some nights its chicken, some nights pasta or beef. I give him a multivitamin from my vet to take care of whatever nutrients he might miss.
I am a homecooker. I use a bunch of different books and add in a multivitamin.
My dog is on the BARF (raw food) diet. It has helped tremendously with his smelly ears, itchy dry skin and digestive system. I pay a bit more for the frozen raw food at my local groomer, but it is well worth it! I add in some rice or oatmeal as a filler twice a week.
