Socialization - What does this mean and how do you do it?

asked by Bunnylover on 14 May 2008 15:32 in Health & Wellness

I have a seven month old purebred Cocker. I keep hearing I should socialize him, but I don't know what they mean! I take him on walks and he meets other dogs, so what else is there?

Socialization is really the most important thing you can do for your puppy. While he has passed the crucial puppyhood stages when socializing would work to avoid certain behavioral issues, your Cocker is still young enough to reverse this trend.

What is socialization? Simply put, it is exposing your dog to as many types of people, situations and stimuli as possible. Some people use the 10 a day rule with puppies, meaning giving them 10 new experiences per day. Why do this? By exposing your dog to a huge range of people and places and allowing him to explore and feel comfortable, he gains confidence. When he is confident in new situations, you won't have to worry about him freaking out if something or someone new comes into his life.

Taking your dog on walks is great, but make sure he is being handled by people he meets. Let people pet or hold your puppy. Don't encourage any scared behaviours like shaking or crying. Only give your dog praise when he is being polite or quietly sniffing the new object in question. If you give affection while your dog shakes, cries or tries to pull away, it just reinforces the negative social behavior.

Some stores will actually allow you to bring your dog inside with you to shop.  For example, Rural King, TLC and pet stores (Pet Co) enjoys having dogs.  This is great socialization!  Also our county 4-H dog club has gatherings in the park for everyone to enjoy.  Good Luck!
