Housebreaking Troubles....

asked by BellaBoo on 15 June 2008 22:07 in Training

My dogs seem to be un-trainable. No matter how much praise I give them when they 'go' in the right place, they keep on pooping where they aren't supposed too!

I totally agree with that last answer!  When I first brought Maggie home I was so worried she wasn't eating enough, I left food out all the time...this resulted in us tiptoeing through the house to avoid the little 'gifts' she was leaving for us :)

Once I had the schedule and her body language figured out, it was pretty easy to anticipate her next move.  Puppies will pee after they've had a nap or after they've had some great playtime.  You can count on a poop about 25min-1hr after they've eaten but that can be fine-tuned if you know your puppy.

Good luck - faith, patience and humor go a long way!!

How old are they? Some breeds are slower to housebreak then others.

In addition, if your dog is under a year old, she or he wont be totally reliable anyway!

Have you tried crate training or confining them to a limited area?

The best solution to housebreaking troubles is not to free feed or offer water all the time. Get on a routine of taking them out every three hours, praise when they go in the right place. A few weeks of serious structure will enable them to suceed and then you can start lenghthening the time between trips outside.

Good luck and let us know how its going!
