Holistic Pet Food Invades Mainstream!!

asked by naturaldogfoodluv on 3 June 2008 17:53 in Food & Nutrition

How great is this? I just found out that Petco is going to start carrying Wellness Natural Food for Dogs and Cats this summer! Between this and the Halo Purely for Pets available at Petsmart, everyone will be able to soon access and afford healthier pet food! Its amazing seeing the industry change like this. Thoughts?

Well,  Wellness may be considered holistic by some but it really is not..  Dogs are carnivores and such are unable to digest grains and most veggies.   http://www.thewholedog.org/artcarni vore.html

And even more concerning is that one kibble is really not better then another since they are all cooked and processed at such high tempratures. There is NO true nutrition left so they spray on synthetic vitamins, etc.  before packaging.   Your dog is actually only getting some fiber and what ever was in the synthetic spray on.   http://www.thewholedog.org/artcooke dfood.html

IF you still want to feed a kibble to your dog,  look for one with NO grains and potatoes at the very least and maybe one with freezed dried raw nutrients layered on or a freeze dried raw diet, period.  OR cook for your dogs OR go totally RAW!

Yay! How wonderful!

A brief history of Wellness:

Wellness is another great brand of pet food. Originally, the brand of treats, Old Mother Hubbard, launched in 1926 as a line of dog biscuits carried throughout the northeastern US.

In an effort to further its commitment to improving its products, and providing the highest quality ingredients for our animal companions, Old Mother Hubbard reformulated its traditional baked dog biscuits and gourmet treats to 100% human grade recipe.

In the 1990's the company decided to make a holistic pet food, formulated with human grade products, including chicken and fish, hormone-free lamb, grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. By 1997, the new pet food, marketed under the brand name Wellness was launched and the company maintains a standard of using only whole foods, with no meat by-products, preservatives, fillers, or artificial colors and flavors.

Glad to have it more readily available to consumers!

Don't you all think that the issue is - with all of the holistic brands expanding, the quality control will be impossible to maintain and therefore, these foods will end up as bad as all the other generics foods?

I am a homecooker - i like to know exactly what goes into my dog's food!

I have been feeding wellness for a long time. I really hope that the product expansion doesn't affect the quality of the product! It will be much more convenient to get the baby's food at a Petco!

I agree with Purebred! Look at what just happened with the Timberwolf recall. On one hand its great to have better quality food available to the public, on the other, the quality control must be maintained along with brand expansion. I wonder if that makes the prices go back up?

I feed Wellness. Ideally this wont screw up the quality because my scotties have been eating it for years!! Thanks CupOFDog for the history on Wellness, I had no idea.

BellaBoo - I think having a large contract with a company like Petco will actually keep prices down - but I have no idea what the quality standards will be and if they will change.
